Preventing Accidents

The majority of accidents occur in the home so make sure you have a first aid kit at the ready and take care to follow the guidelines below:

  • Clear stairways and corridors to help prevent falls and trips
  • Cover sharp corners and ledges to prevent cuts
  • Install stair gates if you have young children
  • Remove all chemical substances and medications from the reach of children
  • Keep your home warm and dry: this will prevent respiratory conditions
  • Install smoke alarms and have them checked regularly (this service is provided free of charge by the fire service)
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector
  • Have appliances checked regularly
  • Keep the garden clear of any objects which may cause harm
  • Wear suitable footwear when going up and down stairs (an incredible number of accidents are caused by people wearing big fluffy slippers on the stairs)
