Causes of severe back pain

Serious back pain may be caused by damage to one or more of the vertebrae; when a disc becomes ruptured or damaged significantly it causes the jelly-like fluid inside the disc to apply pressure to the spinal cord; this condition is commonly known as having a ‘slipped disc’ but is usually referred to as herniated or prolapsed discs by healthcare professionals. Slipped discs usually cause severe pain in the lower back, which may also radiate to the buttocks, thighs, claves and feet; this is caused by the sciatic nerve becoming irritated. Serious back pain may also be caused by trauma, which is usually associated with accidents, falls and sports injuries.
