Spotting the signs of drug abuse

Drug users are often very secretive so it can be difficult to identify a growing addiction; however, there are some signs to look out for:

Physical signs:

  • Bloodshot, red eyes
  • Dilated pupils
  • Swollen eyes
  • Sudden changes in body weight
  • Sudden changes in appetite
  • Lack of coordination and slurred speech
  • Blurred vision and trouble reading

Psychological signs:

  • Mood swings
  • Paranoia
  • Anxiety
  • Drowsiness and confusion
  • Appearing distant or ‘out of it’
  • Becoming irritable and restless
  • Periods of hyperactivity

Behavioural signs:

  • Changes in routine
  • Becoming distant and reluctant to stay in social situations
  • Becoming secretive
  • Change of friends
  • Poor performance at work, college or school
