Rhinoplasty

The nose is one of the most prominent features on the face and can therefore make a real difference to a person’s overall appearance; rhinoplasty involves changing the shape of the nose in order to make the face look more attractive. Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for women and is the most common amongst men.

Why do people have nose jobs?

In some cases, a nose job is performed for health reasons; however, most people have the operation to enhance their appearance by altering the way their nose looks. People who have nose jobs for health reasons usually have problems with their breathing or a blockage in their nasal passage; having the operation can tackle these problems and improve the person’s health.

Aesthetic operations usually change the size and shape of the nose; the most popular change is reduction in the size of the nose. Many patients who have this operation don’t like the way their nose looks and feel they would look more attractive if their nose was smaller, bigger or differently shaped. Many people who have a nose job suffer from a lack of confidence because they think they look unattractive; having the operation helps to restore self-esteem and gives people the boost they need to make the most of their lives.

Before the procedure

Once the patient has decided to go ahead with the operation they will discuss the look of their new nose with the surgeon; this will allow the surgeon to design the appearance of the new nose. The surgeon will explain exactly what the procedure entails and what the patient needs to do before the operation. Most operations take place under general anaesthetic so patients should not eat, drink or smoke for a certain period of time prior to the procedure.

What does the rhinoplasty procedure involve?

The exact nature of the operation depends on the individual case and what kinds of changes are being made to the nose. There are two types of nose reshaping techniques; these include open and closed operations. Open procedures involve an incision being made on the outside of the nose; this is usually made between the nostrils. Closed procedures involve a series of incisions being made inside the nose.

A nose job can alter the appearance of the nose in several different ways so there are many different techniques that may be used:

  • Reducing the size of the nose: this is done by changing the shape of the cartilage and bone inside the nose.
  • Reducing the size of the bridge of the nose: this is done by trimming the septum of the nose; this is located between the bridge of the nose and the cartilage.
  • Changing the length of the nose: this can be done by either increasing or decreasing the size of the septum.
  • Increasing the size of the nose: this involves using cartilage from other parts of the body to make the bridge of the nose more robust.

Once the nose has been resized or reshaped, the surgeon will close the incisions using sutures. In most cases the new nose will be supported and protected by a plastic splint.

Are there any risks involved with rhinoplasty?

As with all surgical procedures there are risks involved. The vast majority of operations are completed successfully with no complications and excellent results; however, complications are possible. All procedures carried out under general anaesthetic carry risks, although complications are very rare; risks associated with general anaesthesia include blood clots, infection and allergic reactions to the anaesthetic. Specific complications associated with nose surgery include a decreased sense of smell, skin irritation, damage to the tear ducts and dark patches underneath they eyes; these conditions are all very rare.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of treatment varies between different surgeons, clinics and healthcare providers but a general guide price would be around £3000 to £4000. The cost of cosmetic treatments often depends on the experience, reputation and level of expertise of the surgeon; those with many years of experience and impressive qualifications often charge a premium rate.

What happens after the rhinoplasty operation?

After the procedure the nose will need time to heal; at first it may look red, bruised and swollen but this should fade fairly quickly. The nose will be fragile for a few weeks after the operation has been completed; patients should avoid strenuous activity and contact sports during this time.

How long do the results of rhinoplasty last?

In the vast majority of cases, the results of rhinoplasty last a lifetime; in extreme cases the nose may require reshaping but this is rare.
