Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection that is caused by a specific form of bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonorrhoea is spread quickly and easily once an infected person has unprotected sex with another person, uses unclean sex toys or has intimate sexual contact with somebody.
What are the symptoms of gonorrhoea?
Common symptoms in women include abnormal discharge, pain during intercourse, abnormal bleeding between periods and abdominal pain. Symptoms for men also include pain during urination, abnormal discharge and pain in the testicles.
How is gonorrhoea treated?
Gonorrhoea is usually treated with a course of antibiotics; this is usually taken in the form of pills but some people may have an injection. In most cases, the antibiotics are effective but if symptoms persist you will need to go back to your GP for further treatment.
