Heartburn and indigestion During Pregnancy: London Health
Heartburn and indigestion are very common during pregnancy; they are caused by hormonal changes taking place in the body and the baby pressing down on the stomach as it grows and gets bigger. Indigestion is an uncomfortable feeling; to prevent indigestion:
- Replace main meals with smaller meals
- Sit up straight while you are eating
- Avoid foods that are spicy or high in fat as these can make indigestion worse
Heartburn can be very painful and uncomfortable; it is characterised by a burning sensation which extends upwards from the stomach that is caused by stomach acid coming up from the stomach into the oesophagus. To ease heartburn you can:
- Drink a glass of milk
- Sleep with your head raised by propping the bed head up; lying flat on your back often makes heartburn worse
- Eat at least 3 hours before you go to bed
