Electrotherapy - physiotherapy treatments : London Health
Electrotherapy uses a variety of different techniques to reduce pain and tension in the muscles, restore muscle movement and aid recovery after an injury. The three main electrotherapy methods are outlined below:
- Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to increase circulation, nerve activity and activate cell activity. Ultrasound can benefit people with soft tissue injuries as it helps to speed up the recovery process.
- TENS (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation): this is a technique which is used to suppress pain by interfering with the delivery of pain messages to the brain. Small pads are applied to the skin and electrical impulses are passed through the skin. TENS also encourages the body to produce endorphins, which are natural chemicals produced in the body to combat pain.
- Laser therapy helps to target specific areas of the body; laser beams stimulate nerve and cell activity, which reduces pain and speeds up healing.
