Self-Help Techniques

Many people cope with stress by following a few simple rules and participating in activities which allow them to relax and reflect. Possible techniques include:

  • Massage: massage has been proven to ease muscle tension and allow the body to relax. Massage also helps a person to relax their mind; it also allows people to have time to themselves, where they can reflect and unwind.
  • Relaxed breathing: take time out to breathe slowly and deeply for a period of 5 minutes each day or whenever you feel stressed; this will help to calm you down.
  • Exercise: exercise releases endorphins and energises the body; it also acts as a welcome distraction to everyday life and a great opportunity to meet new people. Activities such as tai chi, yoga and Pilates are particularly beneficial for combating stress.
  • Talk to someone: talk to someone about your problems or concerns; if you don’t want to talk to somebody you know, you can contact charities such as Childline, the Samaritans and Mind. Most charities offer 24 hour confidential advice, which is free of charge and anonymous. You can also contact your GP or consult the NHS website; there is a huge amount of information and links to charities and organisations that may be able to help you.
