Should I see my doctor?

There is no cure for migraines but many people who suffer from migraines find that a combination of over the counter pain relief and rest eases their symptoms. If pain relief doesn’t work you should consider seeing your GP. You should also see your GP if you experience any of the symptoms listed below:

  • Aura symptoms that occur on the same side of the body each time a person has a migraine
  • If you have your first migraine and you are aged over 50
  • If you are experiencing migraines on an increasingly regular basis
  • If you are experiencing different symptoms  than normal

You should call 999 if you experience a very sudden and severe headache which feels like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.

If you are experiencing regular migraines your doctor may ask you to keep a diary of what activities you do, what you eat and where you are before you have a migraine; this will help to identify potential triggers.
