Staying Healthy

Most ear, nose and throat conditions are more common in the winter months, especially amongst children and the elderly. Many conditions are spread quickly and easily so it can be impossible to avoid getting ill, but there are some steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of developing a condition in your ears, nose or throat; these are outlined below:

Boost your immune system

Boost your immune system by eating well and exercising regularly; incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it needs to fight off infections; you should eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Eating a healthy diet will make positive changes to all areas of your general health, which will make you more resistant to illness. Exercising regularly helps to keep your body fit and healthy, your joints loose and your organs functioning effectively, as well as providing a range of other social and mental health benefits; try to exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week. If you are more vulnerable to illnesses (if you are elderly or have a pre-existing health condition) you may be advised to take vitamin and mineral supplements.

Wrap up warm

If it’s cold outside make sure you wrap up warm by putting on layers of clothing as well as a hat, scarf and gloves. Make sure your home is also nice and warm.

Hygiene

Make sure you wash your hands regularly and dispose of tissues that have been used; this will help to prevent the spread of common infections like colds. Always cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and then wash your hands thoroughly.
