Diarrhoea, like constipation, is common babies as they get used to eating and drinking different foods and drinks. Most cases of diarrhoea will be mild and will subside quickly. Diarrhoea causes changes in bowel habits which cause stools to be much softer and more watery than usual; diarrhoea can also cause babies to produce more soiled nappies that usual.

Causes of diarrhoea

There are several different possible causes of diarrhoea in babies; the most common causes include:

  • Allergies (such as allergies to formula or cow’s milk, for example)
  • Colds
  • Change in foods or milk
  • Viral infections (commonly caused by rotavirus)
  • Food poisoning
  • Reaction to antibiotics

Treating diarrhoea

Most cases of diarrhoea do not require treatment, but you should make sure your baby is kept hydrated by giving them plenty of fluids. If the symptoms persist and you are worried that your baby could have a more serious infection, arrange to see your doctor.
