Reflexology : London Health

Reflexology is an ancient treatment which involves applying pressure to certain areas of the hands and feet (the feet are much more commonly used than the hands); the body is mapped and parts of the feet correspond to certain body parts. Reflexology is based on the principle that treating the whole body enables the body to be treated as a whole entity.

What happens during a reflexology session?

Before the session the reflexologist will usually ask you a few questions about your general health and about any particular worries or conditions you may have; they will also ask about any treatments you may have had in the past. During the session, both feet will be massaged and certain areas of the feet will be massaged more vigorously than others; this can cause very mild pain but it usually subsides quickly. The areas that receive more attention correspond to the areas of the body where there are problems. Most sessions last around 45 minutes; the number of sessions needed depends on the individual.

Which conditions can be treated using reflexology?

Reflexologists claim to be able to improve cases of many different conditions; these include:

  • Sinusitis
  • Migraines
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Digestive disorders
  • Back pain
  • Stress
  • Circulation problems

Reflexology can also be used as a relaxation therapy.

How much does reflexology cost?

Most reflexologists charge between £20 and £30 per session but prices vary so make sure you check before you go ahead with the treatment.

Does reflexology work?

Like most alternative and complementary therapies, experts are divided when it comes to the efficacy of reflexology. Some patients claim it has eased symptoms and some claim it had little or no effect on them.
