Chiropractic : London Health
Chiropractic is based on the principle that a healthy musculo-skeletal system leads to a healthy individual; chiropractic uses a series of different therapies, including massage, heat and ice treatment and electrical stimulation. Chiropractic, like all other forms of alternative and complementary medicine, does not involve the use of any medications or invasive procedures. Chiropractic literally translates as ‘done using the hands’ and mainly involves massage techniques and controlled manipulation.
When can chiropractic be used?
Chiropractic can be used to treat a wide range of patients, from babies to the elderly. Chiropractic can be used to treat conditions such as:
- Lower back pain
- Shoulder problems
- Neck pain
- Upper back pain
- Sciatica
- Sports injuries (including chronic injuries caused by overuse)
Is chiropractic available on the NHS?
Some NHS trusts offer chiropractic
but most don’t; the number of trusts that are offering complementary
therapies is increasing steadily. If you want to find out if your local
Primary Care Trust offers chiropractic you can contact them directly,
ask your GP or consult the NHS website.
How much does private treatment cost?
Private treatment usually costs between
£25 and £40 per half hour session; prices vary according to the chiropractor
you choose.
Does chiropractic hurt?
Some patients may initially feel a
degree of discomfort but this is due to the patient not being used to
the treatment; most patients do not feel any pain during or after a
chiropractic appointment.
Is chiropractic effective?
Most health experts agree that chiropractic
is an effective treatment for conditions such as back and neck pain;
however, research is ongoing and the treatment still has its critics.
